The touch screen and LCD display is a vital and expensive part of any EPOS terminal. However, the hostile nature of many retail environments means that the screens can be subjected to scratches, gouges, dirt, dust, grease, oil, and wear and tear due to normal use. In addition employees are notorious for using pens, cards or long fingernails on the screen instead of fingertips. All of these factors can render the touch screen or LCD display inoperable and result in an expensive repair bill.
Even a properly used, well-maintained touch screen will become damaged from constant use. Certain areas that get a lot of use - for example, a cash key, or a log-in key - will become worn to the point where that area will not respond properly to touches.
